Childhood Lead

The Monmouth County Childhood Lead Poisoning Program (CLPP) focuses on Primary Prevention.

Our goal is to protect children from exposure to lead before they are harmed. There is no safe blood lead level in children. Even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to affect IQ, cause mood swings and digestive issues, and affect academic performance. Sources of lead hazards in a child’s environment must be identified and controlled, or removed using Lead Safe Work Practices.

All contractors working in child occupied dwellings, who will be disturbing lead-based paint (LBP), are required to be certified in NJ by the Department of Community Affairs (DCA). Before hiring a contractor, ask to see his/her certification.

Staff members are available to speak to community groups, educators or parent groups about lead prevention and hazard control, and keeping children lead-safe.

To schedule, contact the Monmouth County Office of Public Health at 732-431-7456 or email health@co.monmouth.nj.us.

The Monmouth County Office of Public Health also provides nursing and environmental case management for children who are identified as having "elevated" blood lead reference values. Our Nurse Case Managers provide medical and developmental guidance and nutritional recommendations. Our Lead Inspectors/Risk Assessors will identify lead hazards and oversee the abatement process, performed by a state-certified contractor, to ensure that further exposure does not occur. Lead inspectors will also perform in-house inspections of residential foods, cookware, and consumer products to identify sources of lead exposure that may be in a child's environment.
