County Commissioners proclaim August
as Overdose Awareness Month
FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County
Commissioners proclaimed August 2026 as Overdose Awareness Month during a
Workshop Meeting on Aug. 13.
The proclamation was
presented to representatives of Prevention First Behavioral Health in Eatontown.
“International Overdose Awareness Day
gives us an opportunity to remember the lives lost to overdose, support the
families and loved ones who continue to feel that loss, and remind our
community that substance use disorder is an illness that should be met with
understanding, not stigma,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “While the
decrease in overdose deaths is encouraging, we know there is still important
work to be done. Monmouth County remains committed to expanding awareness,
connecting residents with resources, and making sure people know that help is
available.”
“Every life lost to an overdose
represents a family, a group of friends, and a community forever changed. By
raising awareness and educating our residents about prevention, treatment,
recovery, and the use of naloxone, we can help save lives and reduce the stigma
surrounding substance use disorder,” said Commissioner Susan M. Kiley, liaison to the
Department of Health and Human Services. “International Overdose Awareness Day
reminds us that compassion, understanding, and access to support are essential
as we continue working together to address this public health challenge in
Monmouth County.”
