Board of County Commissioners reminds
residents about mosquito control techniques

FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners is reminding residents and visitors to eliminate standing water around their homes and properties following recent rainstorms to help prevent mosquito breeding.

“With the amount of rain Monmouth County has received this summer, residents can help reduce mosquito populations by emptying any containers holding standing water around their property,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “The County takes a proactive approach to mosquito control through ongoing surveillance, continuous monitoring and targeted treatments to help reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses. One mosquito residents should be especially aware of is the Asian tiger mosquito, which can breed in even small amounts of standing water and is most active during the day, unlike many other mosquito species that are most active at dawn and dusk.”

“Everyone can do their part to help control mosquitoes by regularly emptying standing water from tarps, buckets and other containers around their homes,” said Commissioner Susan M. Kiley, liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services. “When spending time outdoors, residents should also protect themselves by using insect repellent and wearing long sleeves and long pants whenever possible. The County offers free mosquito inspections to identify standing water that may support mosquito larvae. If larvae are found, inspectors will treat the water or eliminate the breeding source. Because mosquitoes can develop from eggs into flying adults in as little as seven days, it's important to act quickly.
