County
ready to battle winter storm
Public
Works Operations Center monitoring weather
FREEHOLD, NJ – With meteorologists predicting more than
two feet of snow, the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners wants
residents to know that the County stands prepared and is closely monitoring the
anticipated storm.
“We know that a massive storm is coming, but we are ready
for it,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the County’s
Department of Public Works. “The Public Works Operation Center was activated at
10 a.m. this morning and we have 275 employees in place to operate the 230
trucks and 60 pieces of machinery equipped to address any situations that may
arise.”
According to the National Weather Service, snow
totals are expected to range from 24 to 30 inches. Rain is predicted to turn to
snowfall this afternoon and continue through Monday morning. Hazardous
conditions are expected, especially this evening, and travelers are urged to
proceed with extreme caution.
“While
out on the roads, please exercise caution and if you come across plows and
emergency response vehicles, make sure to give them room to do their work,” said
Commissioner Director Arnone. “We estimate that
a storm of this magnitude will require more than 10,000 tons of salt to treat
roughly 1,000 lane miles of County roads and all County facilities.”
“My fellow Commissioners and I are grateful to our first
responders and the Department of Public Works for their hard work in preparing
for the storm and for their ongoing dedication to keeping our communities
safe,” added Commissioner Director Arnone.
