Commissioners honor Gillian Ober for being named
Monmouth County and N.J. Teacher of the Year

FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners congratulated Freehold Borough School District teacher Gillian Ober for being selected as the 2025-26 Monmouth County Teacher of the Year during a Workshop Meeting on Sept. 25.

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) subsequently named Ober the 2025-26 New Jersey Teacher of the Year on Oct. 8.

The NJDOE selects the winning teacher in each County. Ober was an English as a Second Language Teacher at the Park Avenue Elementary School at the time of the award. She currently teaches at the Freehold Intermediate School.

“My fellow Commissioners and I are thrilled to highlight incredible educators like Gillian,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “Gillian was previously recognized with the 2019 New Jersey Department of Education Distinguished Clinical Intern Award. She is known for working with newcomers and students with interrupted formal education. Congratulations to Gillian on this well-deserved designation.”

“In addition to her position in the Freehold Borough School District, Gillian serves as an adjunct professor at Georgian Court University and Monmouth University, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on a variety of topics in education,” said Commissioner Erik Anderson, liaison to the Monmouth County Superintendent of Schools. “She has also co-authored several publications about second language writing and instructional practices. We commend Gillian for her years of hard work and dedication to public education in New Jersey.”
