Navesink
River Road bridge closure for
emergency
repairs
MIDDLETOWN, NJ – Navesink River Road has been closed
to traffic near the bridge over McClees Creek for emergency repairs due to
damage to a retaining wall.
“I want to stress that there is no damage to the bridge
itself. The excessive recent rainfall has saturated the underlying soils
supporting the roadway approach, resulting in movement of the adjacent
retaining walls and visible roadway settlement. For the safety of the
travelling public, the County has closed the road and initiated repairs,” said
Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone, liaison to the Monmouth County Division
of Engineering, “With that said, we have contacted the design professionals,
contractor and inspectors from the original construction to review what may
have caused this.”
“We put our trust in the expertise of our hired
professionals, and we will ensure they are held fully accountable for this
unacceptable failure,” added Commissioner Director Arnone.
The County mobilized an emergency contractor, who was onsite
at 7 a.m. to begin repairs to the retaining wall. Inspectors will evaluate the full
extent of the repairs and estimate the timeframe.
“Please know that we understand the public's frustration and
are working diligently to reopen the road,” said Commissioner Director Arnone.
“We ask that everyone in the area follow the posted detours during the
closure.”
In total, the County maintains
approximately 1,000 lane miles of roads, 980 bridges and culverts and 250
traffic signals and beacons.
