County Commissioners proclaim
May 17-23 as National Safe Boating Week
FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County
Commissioners proclaimed May 17-23 as National Safe Boating Week during a
Commissioners Workshop meeting on May 22.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s latest report, as a result of recreational boating accidents in 2023, there were 43,844 incidents with 564 deaths related to
those incidents, 2,126 injuries and $63 million dollars of damage to property.
“We are proud to proclaim May 17-23 as National Safe
Boating Week in Monmouth County,” said
Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “As a coastal community, we encourage
those who are out on the water to wear a properly fitted lifejacket, never
drink and boat and make sure you have safety gear on board and readily
available in case of an emergency.”
“Throughout the summer, the Monmouth County
Sheriff’s Office will be patrolling our waterways to ensure that vessels are
being operated safely,” said Commissioner Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley,
liaison to the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office. “If you are on a boat and need
help, call 911 or use VHF Channel 9 on your vessel’s radio.”
