County Commissioners declare March
as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County
Commissioners declared March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month during their
workshop meeting on March 13.
"My fellow Commissioners and I have recognized
March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month to encourage people to get screened
and raise awareness about the disease," said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone.
" While Colorectal Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related
deaths in the United States, it is highly treatable with proper screening. We
encourage everyone to speak with their primary care physician about resources
that may be available to them."
The observance of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
provides an opportunity to offer education on the importance of early detection
and screening.
“With one in every 24 people
expected to be diagnosed with colorectal cancer in their lifetime, early
detection is crucial,” said Commissioner Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley,
liaison to the Department of Health and Human Services. “According to the
American Cancer Society, in 2023 there were approximately 153,020 new cases of
Colorectal Cancer and by 2030 it is estimated to be the number one cancer
killer for those ages 20 to 49; We encourage those who would like to learn more,
or schedule their screening to contact their primary care physician.”
