Monmouth County to conduct mosquito
control
operation in Middletown on Sept. 12
MIDDLETOWN, NJ – The
Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has announced that due to
evidence of West Nile virus, a mosquito control operation targeting adult
mosquitoes will take place in Middletown from 4:30-6:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept.
12, weather permitting.
“The
Mosquito Control Division will be conducting an adult mosquito control
operation from Main Street north to Route 36 and east from Palmer Avenue to
Ravatt Road/Fielding Avenue in the Harmony section of Middletown due to
evidence of West Nile virus,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “The
County would like to remind residents that it offers courtesy inspections where
an inspector can visit your property to look for standing water sources that
support mosquito larvae. To learn more about this service, go to www.visitmonmouth.com.”
The Division will be applying Zenivex E4 RTU using
truck-mounted Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) equipment mounted in the bed of a pick-up
truck.
“Residents can help ‘Fight the Bite’ by using the Mosquito Control checklist to find and eliminate all the places where mosquitos
breed around homes and other structures,” said Commissioner Susan M.
Kiley, liaison to the Mosquito Control Division. “Mid-August through
mid-September is traditionally the peak season for mosquito-borne disease (West
Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis), so the Division advises all
residents to protect themselves by using repellent and/or to wear long-sleeved
shirts and pants when outdoors, especially near dusk or dawn.”
Pyrethroids
have been recommended for Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) mosquito control in New Jersey
by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s current evaluation considers pyrethroid-containing products
to be slightly toxic with minimal potential risk to people when used properly
as part of an integrated mosquito control program.
