Time to order tree seedlings for spring planting
County’s 4-H Teen Council sale is under way
FREEHOLD, NJ – With the chilly temperatures outside, it is the right time to stay inside and plan your upcoming gardening activities. If you are thinking about planting trees in your landscape this spring, the Monmouth County 4-H Teen Council may have just the right species at the right price.
Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Douglas Fir and White Pines are the four varieties of evergreen seedlings available in bundles of 25 seedlings for $15. Deciduous seedlings available in bundles of 10 are Kousa Dogwood (tree), Silky Dogwood (shrub) and Redbud (bush). Deciduous seedling bundles are $10 per bundle.
The 4-H Teen Council is accepting orders for the seedling bundles from now through April 15. The order form is available on the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service section of the county Web site at
www.visitmonmouth.com/page.aspx?ID=173. Or, you can call the county 4-H office at 732-431-7263 for an order form or more information about each variety.
Each bundle contains a single variety of seedlings that are two or three years old and are approximately six to 24 inches tall. The seedlings will be available for pickup between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 2 at the Monmouth County Agriculture Building, 4000 Kozloski Rd., Freehold.
“This is the Teen Council’s primary and most popular fundraiser of the year,” said Macy Compton, State 4-H Program Coordinator. “The teens use the money raised from this sale to offset the cost of community service projects, annual state teen leadership conference and other council activities.”
The county’s Teen Council is a group of high school youth who actively meet, plan and participate in activities that develop leadership skills, address community needs and help them serve as role models and teachers for younger 4-H’ers
The 4-H Youth Development Program is part of Rutgers Cooperative Extension. 4-H offers educational programs to all youth, grades K-12, on an age-appropriate basis, without regard to race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
