Proclaim ‘Library Week’ in Monmouth County

FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognized the importance of the library system and declared the week of April 10 as “Library Week” in Monmouth County.
The “Library Week” proclamation was presented to Monmouth County Library Director Judi Tolchin and Monmouth County Library Commissioners Renee Swartz and Frank Wells at the Board’s workshop meeting on April 14.

“The Library System constantly strives to provide programs and services that are informative and are an enhancement for our communities and residents,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the County library. “The County’s libraries are highly regarded throughout New Jersey and are places where patrons can access a variety of resources.

“Our library system is used to find research on specific topics, provide reading materials on a diversity of subjects, either for pleasure or information, to display art exhibits and assist with tax preparation and job searches,” continued Burry. “The reputation of a library has evolved over the years and is more than just a place to borrow books. Library Week recognizes they are multi-purpose facilities that enhance learning in many ways.”

During “Library Week,” the Monmouth County Library System offered the “Food for Fines” program, where donations of canned food could be substituted for overdue book fines, a partnership developed to aid the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in its mission to feed the hungry. During “Library Week” (April 10 -16), libraries reduced fines by $1 for every food item donated. People who do not have fines are also encouraged to donate food.

Food items suitable for donation are non-perishable, protein-rich foods such as peanut butter, granola bars and tuna fish. Other most needed food items is ready-to-eat canned meals, canned fruits, canned vegetables, instant potatoes, canned and dry soup, canned pork and beans, canned juices, sip-size juices and hot and cold cereal.

“The Monmouth County Library System is a treasure,” stated Burry. “It’s more than a building with shelves of books. It is a window to the world and a place where learning occurs in a variety of ways, including serving as a place where we can help the hungry. Our libraries are a jewel of county government. I urge everyone to visit a County library and take advantage of all it has to offer.”

The County library headquarters is located in Manalapan. Libraries with branch status in the County system currently include the Eastern Branch in Shrewsbury, Allentown, Atlantic Highlands, Colts Neck, Hazlet, Holmdel, Howell, Marlboro, Ocean Township, Oceanport, Wall and West Long Branch.

Towns with member status of the County library system include Brielle, Eatontown, Fair Haven, Interlaken, Keansburg, Little Silver, Manasquan, Monmouth Beach, Neptune City, Oceanic (Rumson), Sea Bright, Sea Girt, Tinton Falls and Union Beach.
