Freeholder DiMaso honored for public service

COLTS NECK, NJ – Freeholder Deputy Director Serena DiMaso was honored last week by Earle Naval Weapons Station for her dedication to government service and her positive example for women considering a career in public service.
Earle Naval Weapons Station Commander Jay Steingold recognized Freeholder DiMaso at a gathering held on March 30 at the base. In attendance were sailors, officers, and civilians.
DiMaso spoke on the theme of "Working to Form a More Perfect Union: Honoring Women in Public Service and Government."
“Public service is an opportunity to give back to our communities and play an active role in determining the direction and focus of government,” said DiMaso. “Women offer substantive insights, opinions and solutions to issues facing our towns, counties and state. There are many opportunities for women to participate in government and contribute to improving everyone’s quality of life.
“Women committed to careers in public service are role models,” commented DiMaso. “Having a strong support group and recognizing there needs to be a balance between a career and one’s home life are important. Those of us serving have a responsibility to share our experience and encourage other women to consider the rewarding career public service offers.”
DiMaso’s career in government service started in 2001 as a Holmdel Township committeewoman; a post she held for 11 years; serving as mayor for four years. While on the governing body, she served on the Planning Board and held leadership roles in Administration, Public Safety and Public Works. She also supported the preservation of open space, expanded shared services and advocated for responsible budgeting. She also was active in the discussions that resulted in the transition of the former Bell Labs complex into its second life in the community.
DiMaso is the Deputy Director of the 2016 Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders and serves as the freeholder liaison to 11 County divisions including the Office of Emergency Management, Belford Ferry, Improvement Authority, Mosquito Control, County Planning Board, Reclamation Center, Workforce Development, Superintendent of Schools, Shade Tree, Tourism and Weights & Measures.
