County proclaims ‘Paint the Town Pink Month’

Seeks to raise awareness of the importance of early detection

FREEHOLD, NJ – On May 14, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders proclaimed the month of May as “Paint the Town Pink Month” in Monmouth County. Pictured left to right: Freeholder Thomas A. The “Paint the Town Pink Month” proclamation was presented to breast cancer survivors Kimberly McCurnin, Mary Lou Ferchak and Lorraine Pyanoe, who work in the Monmouth County Surrogate’s Office.

“The best defense against breast cancer is early detection,” Freeholder Deputy Director Serena DiMaso said. “Regular self-examinations are important and every woman should get an annual mammogram after consulting with her physician.”

Paint the Town Pink Month is organized as a community-wide effort designed to make a difference in the lives of women in the community by encouraging women to have annual mammograms and to financially assist in providing screenings for women in community who are in need.

“By participating in the ‘Paint the Town Pink” campaign, each town helps to raise awareness for the importance of early detection of breast cancer and encourages community involvement and camaraderie,” said Freeholder Director Gary J. Rich, Sr. “The freeholders commend all of the towns for their contributions to this month-long event.”

During the month of May, anyone that visits local businesses who support “Paint the Town Pink” can contribute to the Pink Fund that supports awareness and raises money to provide mammograms to women in need and women who do not have regular health screenings.

Freeholder John P. Curley added that men are also victims of breast cancer.

“This is a health issue that affects everyone, not just women,” said Curley, liaison to the Monmouth County Health Department. “That is why routine physical examines, regular self-examinations and mammograms are so important.”
