Freeholders hope to raise awareness of Autism

Disorder affects social, learning and behavioral skills

 

FREEHOLD, NJ – On April 10, the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders presented a proclamation to commemorate Autism Awareness Month, which is observed in the month of April.

The Board presented the proclamation to Dr. David Abbott, Monmouth-Ocean Educational Services Commission Interim Superintendent of Schools, Christopher Rooney, Monmouth-Ocean Educational Services Commission Assistant Superintendent of Schools, Joseph Annibale, Monmouth-Ocean Educational Services Commission Board President and Union Beach Superintendent of Schools and Robert Baroska, Principal of The Shore Center for students with autism, with the hope to raise public awareness of this developmental disorder.
 
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder affecting social, learning and behavioral skills which include High Functioning Autism, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and Pervasive Developmental Disorder which manifests itself in the first three years of life.
 
“Because of schools such as The Shore Center for students with autism, we can continue to help raise support and awareness of autism spectrum disorders,” said Freeholder Thomas A. Arnone. “The hard work and dedication of these institutions is vital for the individuals with autism and their families.”
 
The Shore Center is a school whose staff is fully trained in implementing general education curriculum in all academic content areas aligned with the New Jersey Core Content Standards (NJCCCS) and the Core Content Standards (CCS).  While implementing general education curriculum, The Shore Center ensures that the needs of all the individual students are met by giving each student the necessary modifications and accommodations.
